Knee Joint01:23

Knee Joint

3.5K
The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. As is characteristic of synovial joints, the knee joint has a thin articular capsule that partially surrounds this joint cavity. Additionally, several ligaments, muscles, and cartilaginous structures support the movement of the knee.
A total of seven ligaments support the knee joint. The patellar ligament, which is also attached to the quadriceps femoris...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Post-traumatic knee arthritis presents significant surgical challenges.
  • Prosthetic surgery for this condition carries a high risk of complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To outline essential planning considerations for knee replacement in chronic post-traumatic arthritis.
  • To discuss implant selection strategies and the importance of limb alignment restoration.

Main Methods:

  • Review of surgical planning elements for post-traumatic knee arthritis.
  • Categorization of post-traumatic arthritis into extra-articular and articular deformities.
  • Discussion on the utility of algorithmic approaches for implant choice.

Main Results:

  • Meticulous planning, including diagnosis and consideration of approach, axis, bone loss, implant choice, and constraint level, is crucial.
  • Algorithmic tools can aid surgeons in selecting appropriate implants.
  • Correct implant positioning and restoration of limb alignment are associated with excellent outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • Careful preoperative planning and execution are paramount for successful knee replacement in chronic post-traumatic cases.
  • Achieving optimal implant positioning and limb alignment leads to results comparable to standard total knee arthroplasty.
