Background:

Intimate partner violence (IPV) presents significant challenges within African American communities.
Existing qualitative findings on IPV among African American women are often isolated and lack generalizability.

Purpose of the Study:

To synthesize isolated qualitative findings on IPV among African American women.
To develop a framework for understanding and addressing IPV in this population.
To inform clinical practice and future research.

Main Methods:

Qualitative systematic review of existing literature.
Synthesis of isolated qualitative findings.
Development of a conceptual framework.

Main Results:

Ubiquitous oppression and abuse contribute to IPV.
Personal and interpersonal support are often insufficient.
Barriers include ambivalence, fear, mental health issues, and negative perceptions of services.
Holistic, Afrocentric services enhance resolution.
Outcomes include conditional safety and personal growth for mothers and children.

Conclusions:
