    Summary

    Two teeth bleaching protocols using 6% hydrogen peroxide were equally effective in whitening teeth and causing mild sensitivity. Both the 36-minute and 3x12-minute application methods yielded similar results over two sessions.

    Background:

    • Tooth bleaching is a common cosmetic dental procedure.
    • Patient demand for faster and effective bleaching treatments is increasing.
    • Understanding the impact of different application protocols on efficacy and patient-reported outcomes is crucial.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the effectiveness of two different light-activated 6% hydrogen peroxide bleaching protocols.
    • To assess and compare tooth sensitivity induced by the two bleaching protocols.
    • To evaluate efficacy using objective (spectrophotometer) and subjective (shade guides) measures.

    Main Methods:

    • A blinded, randomized clinical trial involving 30 patients.
    • Split-mouth design comparing a 36-minute application versus three 12-minute applications per session, over two sessions.
    • Objective color change measured by spectrophotometer (L*, a*, b*) and subjective evaluation using VITA shade guides.
    • Tooth sensitivity assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS).

    Main Results:

    • Both bleaching protocols resulted in significant tooth color change from baseline.
    • No statistically significant difference in tooth color change was observed between the 36-minute and 3x12-minute protocols (ΔE* = 5.71 vs 4.93, p=0.20).
    • No significant differences in tooth sensitivity were reported between the groups, with mild sensitivity experienced by a small percentage of patients (6.25%).

    Conclusions:

    • Light-activated 6% hydrogen peroxide bleaching is effective regardless of application protocol (36-minute vs. 3x12-minute).
    • Both protocols demonstrate comparable efficacy in tooth whitening.
    • Neither protocol showed a significant difference in the risk or intensity of tooth sensitivity.
