Summary

CO2 laser-assisted sclerectomy surgery (CLASS) effectively lowers intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma patients. This surgical treatment shows significant IOP reduction and medication decrease, with a low complication rate.

Background:

  • Open-angle glaucoma requires effective surgical treatments to manage intraocular pressure (IOP).
  • CO2 laser-assisted sclerectomy surgery (CLASS) is a potential surgical option for glaucoma management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of CO2 laser-assisted sclerectomy surgery (CLASS) in patients with open-angle glaucoma.
  • To assess the efficacy and safety of CLASS in lowering intraocular pressure and medication dependence.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-one patients underwent CLASS using the OT-134-IOPtiMate system.
  • Postoperative follow-up included IOP measurement, medication use, visual acuity, and complication assessment at multiple intervals up to 12 months.

Main Results:

  • Mean preoperative IOP of 29.2 mmHg decreased to 17.7 mmHg at 6 months and 17.3 mmHg at 12 months.
  • Complete success was achieved in 61.1% at 6 months and 50% at 12 months; qualified success was achieved in 72.2% and 70%, respectively.
  • Antiglaucomatous medication use decreased significantly, and only one serious complication (macroperforation) occurred.

Conclusions:

  • CO2 laser-assisted sclerectomy surgery (CLASS) is an effective method for lowering intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma.
  • CLASS demonstrates a favorable safety profile with significant reductions in IOP and medication requirements.
