Use of in vivo consultation in dyadic psychotherapy
1U Kentucky Medical Ctr.
Abstract:
Describes the consultancy model suggested by an application of communications theory to systems of individual (dyadic) psychotherapy. The consultant assumes the role of participant observer during a session to bring about an emergence in the dyad of a new cognitive and affective awareness of the situation. This may be accomplished by commenting upon the presence of phenomena such as triangulations, metacommunications, projective identification, and collusive transference-countertransference distortions. Consultant tactics include asking the therapist and the client to relate their views of the therapy relationship, uncovering "role-proscribed affect," and exploring the significance of the therapy for both parties.
