Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of different sit-stand protocols on sedentary time and physical activity in office workers.
  • To assess the effectiveness of height-adjustable workstations in modifying work-time physical activity.

Main Methods:

  • Randomized controlled trial with 26 office workers over 4 weeks.
  • Three sit-stand protocols using height-adjustable workstations were compared to a usual sitting control group.
  • Objective measurement of sitting, standing, and stepping time using inclinometry (activPAL).
  • Leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) assessed via self-report.

Main Results:

  • Intervention groups decreased work sitting time by an average of 113 minutes per 8-hour workday.
  • Work standing time increased by an average of 96 minutes per 8-hour workday.
  • No significant impact on leisure-time physical activity or sleep duration was observed.

Conclusions:

  • Sit-stand protocols using height-adjustable workstations are effective in reducing occupational sitting time.
  • These interventions appear safe, with no significant adverse effects on leisure-time physical activity or sleep.
  • Promoting sit-stand workstations can be a viable strategy for improving workplace health behaviors.
