Genetic variations in DEFB1 and LTF genes are linked to chronic periodontitis susceptibility. This study in an Italian population found specific DEFB1 and LTF single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with the disease.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Immunology
- Periodontology
Background:
- Chronic periodontitis involves bacterial infection and altered host immune responses, leading to alveolar bone destruction and tooth loss.
- The innate immune system, including beta-defensins and lactoferrin, may influence susceptibility to periodontitis.
- Genetic factors contribute to individual differences in disease risk.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between specific genetic variations in the DEFB1 and LTF genes and the risk of developing chronic periodontitis.
- To explore the role of oral innate immune system genes in periodontitis susceptibility within an Italian isolated population.
Main Methods:
- Genotyping of seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the DEFB1 and LTF genes.
- Analysis of SNPs in 155 healthy controls and 439 chronic periodontitis patients from North-East Italy.
Main Results:
- Significant associations were identified between periodontitis and two DEFB1 SNPs (g. -20G>A and g. -44C>G).
- Significant associations were also found between periodontitis and two LTF SNPs (p.Ala29Thr and p.Lys47Arg).
Conclusions:
- Genetic variations in DEFB1 and LTF genes appear to play a role in the susceptibility to chronic periodontitis.
- These findings highlight the importance of innate immune system genetics in periodontal disease development.
