Pulmonary Tuberculosis III

1.2K
Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious infection primarily affecting the lung parenchyma but which can also affect other body parts. TB can be classified based on disease development, presentation, and the affected anatomical site.
The first classification is based on the development of the disease, and it includes the following categories:

Pneumonia I: Introduction01:30

Pneumonia I: Introduction

1.1K
Pneumonia is an acute respiratory infection that targets the lungs, specifically the alveoli. These tiny air sacs, essential for oxygen exchange, become engorged with pus and fluid, severely hindering breathing, decreasing oxygen absorption, and causing significant pain and discomfort during respiration.
Risk Factors
Various factors influence the likelihood of developing pneumonia. Age plays a crucial role, with infants, children under two, and individuals over 65 at increased risk due to their...

Tuberculosis, more commonly referred to as TB, is an infectious disease stemming from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. While it primarily impacts the lungs, TB can also affect other body areas. Given its severity and global impact, timely and accurate diagnosis is crucial for controlling its spread and improving patient outcomes.
Several diagnostic approaches are used to detect TB. The conventional method is the Tuberculin Skin Test (TST), also known as the Mantoux test. However, this method has...

Summary

A swallowed wooden toothpick caused serious complications, including meningitis, in a 66-year-old man. Prompt CT scans and surgery successfully removed the foreign body, leading to recovery.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Neurology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Ingestion of sharp foreign bodies is uncommon.
  • Complications can include perforation and systemic infection.

Observation:

  • A 66-year-old male presented with syncope, back pain, and altered mental status.
  • CT revealed a foreign body traversing sacrum to sigmoid colon and intracranial gas.
  • Meningitis was diagnosed via lumbar puncture.

Findings:

  • A wooden toothpick was identified as the foreign body.
  • Exploratory laparoscopy successfully retrieved the toothpick.
  • The patient recovered after antibiotic treatment.

Implications:

  • CT imaging is crucial for diagnosing penetrating foreign bodies.
