Summary

Adipose-derived stem cell (ADSC) sheets significantly improved anal sphincter function in a rat model after surgery. This regenerative therapy shows promise for treating anal sphincter dysfunction caused by anorectal procedures.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of adipose-derived stem cell (ADSC) sheets in restoring anal sphincter function.
  • To assess the potential of ADSC sheets as a novel biotechnological approach for treating anal sphincter dysfunction.

Main Methods:

  • An animal model using Sprague-Dawley rats with resected anal sphincters was developed.
  • ADSC sheets were transplanted into the resected area in the experimental group; a control group received no transplantation.
  • Anal function was assessed by measuring resting pressure, and smooth muscle regeneration was evaluated histologically.

Main Results:

  • Rats treated with ADSC sheets demonstrated significantly improved anal pressure compared to the control group.
  • Histological analysis revealed smooth muscle regeneration in the vicinity of the remaining muscle tissue.
