Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) and carotid artery intimal-medial thickness (cIMT) are elevated in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Increased EAT and cIMT correlate with longer diabetes duration, aiding cardiovascular risk prediction.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Diabetology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.
  • Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) and carotid artery intimal-medial thickness (cIMT) are emerging biomarkers for cardiovascular risk assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate echocardiography's diagnostic value in measuring EAT thickness in T2DM patients.
  • To assess the correlation between EAT thickness and cIMT in T2DM patients.
  • To investigate the relationship between EAT and cIMT in the context of diabetes duration.

Main Methods:

  • Echocardiography and high-frequency ultrasonography were used to measure EAT and cIMT.
  • Sixty-eight T2DM patients were divided into two groups based on diabetes duration (≤10 years and >10 years).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Thirty healthy subjects served as a control group.
  • Main Results:

    • Both EAT and cIMT were significantly higher in T2DM patients compared to controls (p<0.05).
    • Patients with diabetes duration >10 years showed significantly higher EAT and cIMT than those with duration ≤10 years (p<0.05).
    • Univariate analysis revealed significant positive associations between EAT thickness and age, BMI, waist circumference, LDL, TG, diabetes duration, and cIMT (all p<0.05).
    • Multiple regression analysis identified age, BMI, and cIMT as significant independent predictors of EAT thickness (p<0.05).

    Conclusions:

    • Echocardiography is a valuable tool for assessing EAT thickness in T2DM.
    • Elevated EAT and cIMT are associated with T2DM and longer disease duration.
    • Routine screening of EAT and cIMT in T2DM patients can aid in predicting cardiovascular risks and preventing complications.
