Background:

  • The prognostic significance of Human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) in lung cancer is debated.
  • Existing research presents conflicting findings regarding HE4's role in predicting patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a meta-analysis to clarify the prognostic value of HE4 expression in lung cancer.
  • To assess the association between HE4 expression and overall survival (OS) in lung cancer patients.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search across PubMed, Embase, and Wanfang databases.
  • Inclusion of 8 studies comprising 1412 lung cancer patients.
  • Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated.

Main Results:

  • High HE4 expression correlated with poor OS in both univariate (HR=1.73) and multivariate (HR=2.49) analyses.
  • Stratified analysis revealed a significant association between high HE4 expression and worse OS in Asian patients (HR=2.48).
  • No significant association was found between high HE4 expression and OS in Caucasian patients (HR=1.12).

Conclusions:

  • Elevated serum HE4 levels serve as a marker for poor prognosis in lung cancer.
  • HE4 is a particularly valuable prognostic indicator in Asian lung cancer patients.
