Summary

Sleep in hypoxia impairs cognitive reaction time, but not motor skills. This effect on cognitive function after altitude exposure warrants further investigation for high-altitude workers and mountaineers.

Background:

  • Sleep disturbances in hypoxia, such as sleep apnea, are known to impair reaction time.
  • High altitude sleep can cause periodic breathing and oxygen desaturation even in healthy individuals.
  • The impact of short-term hypoxia exposure on reaction time in mountaineers and workers is not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of sleeping in a normobaric hypoxic environment on reaction time.
  • To differentiate the impact on cognitive and motor components of reaction time.
  • To explore the relationship between altitude, hypoxia, and reaction time performance.

Main Methods:

  • Eleven healthy students slept at simulated altitudes of 3500m and 5500m.
  • Polysomnography was used to monitor sleep at 5500m.
  • A choice reaction test was administered at baseline (450m) and after hypoxic sleep exposure.

Main Results:

  • Cognitive reaction time significantly increased with higher simulated altitude.
  • No significant changes were observed in motor reaction time (movement time).
  • Lower oxygen saturation (SpO2) surprisingly correlated with shorter cognitive reaction time.

Conclusions:

  • Sleep in hypoxia does not appear to affect simple reaction time tasks overall.
  • Cognitive reaction time is delayed by hypoxia, while motor reaction time remains unaffected.
  • The causality of increased cognitive reaction time in hypoxia needs further research, especially for high-altitude occupations.
