Fibromyalgia fatigue is multidimensional, impacting daily life. A new 17-item measure, the MDF-Fibro-17, was developed to comprehensively assess this fatigue in clinical trials.
Area of Science:
- Rheumatology
- Clinical Psychology
- Psychometrics
Background:
- Fibromyalgia (FM) affects over five million Americans, characterized by chronic widespread pain.
- Fatigue is a primary, disabling symptom for many FM patients.
- Existing fatigue measures lack the comprehensiveness required by regulatory bodies like the FDA.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a comprehensive, multidimensional Patient Reported Outcome (PRO) measure for FM-related fatigue.
- To create a tool suitable for assessing FM fatigue in clinical trials to support product claims.
Main Methods:
- Reviewed qualitative and quantitative data from three prior studies involving FM patients in the US, Germany, and France.
- Conducted concept elicitation interviews, cognitive debriefing, and pilot testing of a preliminary item pool.
- Utilized a methodology study to explore initial psychometrics of the item pool.
Main Results:
- Identified five key domains of FM fatigue: Global Experience, Cognitive, Physical, Motivation, and Impact on Function.
- Selected 17 items from an initial pool of 23 to represent these five dimensions.
- Developed the Multidimensional Daily Diary of Fatigue-Fibromyalgia-17 (MDF-Fibro-17) PRO measure.
Conclusions:
- Qualitative and preliminary quantitative data support the multidimensional nature of FM fatigue.
- The MDF-Fibro-17 demonstrates strong content validity for assessing FM-related fatigue.
- Further quantitative evaluation of the MDF-Fibro-17's psychometric properties is reported separately.
