Positron Emission Tomography01:29

Positron Emission Tomography

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique involving radiopharmaceuticals — substances that emit short-lived radiation. Although the first PET scanner was introduced in 1961, it took 15 more years before radiopharmaceuticals were combined with the technique and revolutionized its potential.
One of the main requirements of a PET scan is a positron-emitting radioisotope, which is produced in a cyclotron and then attached to a substance used by the part of the body being...

Summary

The Radiological Physics Center (RPC) uses anthropomorphic phantoms for quality assurance (QA) in NCI-sponsored clinical trials. Their program effectively credentialed institutions, showing improved phantom acceptance rates in 2011.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Physics
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Clinical Trials Quality Assurance

Background:

  • The National Cancer Institute (NCI) requires quality assurance (QA) for institutions participating in advanced technology clinical trials.
  • The Radiological Physics Center (RPC) developed an anthropomorphic phantom program to facilitate this credentialing process.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To detail the phantoms, program logistics, and outcomes of the RPC's anthropomorphic QA phantom program.
  • To assess the program's effectiveness in credentialing institutions for NCI-sponsored clinical trials.

Main Methods:

  • Developed four anthropomorphic phantom designs (head & neck, pelvis, lung, spine) containing dosimeters.
  • Institutions receive, image, plan, treat, and return the phantom for analysis.
  • Measured dose distributions are compared against the institution's treatment plan dosimetry.

Main Results:

  • The RPC maintains an inventory of 4 different phantom types for national and international distribution.
  • In 2011, 444 phantoms were dispatched, with institutions returning them in an average of 26 days.
  • Acceptance rates for H&N, spine, and lung phantoms increased in 2011, while the pelvis phantom rate slightly decreased.

Conclusions:

  • The RPC's QA phantom program is an effective and responsive tool for evaluating advanced technology use in NCI trials.
  • The program demonstrates efficiency in phantom distribution, analysis, and reporting.
  • The program supports the quality and consistency of radiation therapy in clinical trials.
