Working Memory in the Processing of Long-Distance Dependencies: Interference and Filler Maintenance

This study shows that filler phrases are actively maintained in working memory during long-distance dependency processing. This maintenance incurs costs, evidenced by increased reading times due to interference in object relative clauses but not ellipsis sentences.
