Summary
Tibial tunnel reaming during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with hamstring autograft does not appear to cause anterolateral meniscal root injury. Post-operative MRIs showed no signs of injury in this case series.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic surgery
- Sports medicine
- Radiology
Background:
- Anatomic single-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using hamstring autograft is a common procedure.
- Potential complications, such as anterolateral meniscal root injury, require investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the risk of anterolateral meniscal root injury following tibial tunnel reaming during ACL reconstruction.
- To evaluate the diagnostic utility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for detecting this specific injury.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 104 primary ACL reconstructions using hamstring autograft.
- Radiological assessment of pre- and post-operative MRIs (>1 year follow-up) for lateral meniscus extrusion (>3 mm).
Main Results:
- No cases of anterolateral meniscal root injury were identified in the reviewed patient cohort.
- The study found no radiological evidence of this specific meniscal injury.
Conclusions:
- Tibial tunnel reaming in this ACL reconstruction technique does not appear to cause anterolateral meniscal root injury.
- MRI follow-up exceeding one year post-operation did not reveal any instances of this complication.
