Esophagus01:24

Esophagus

4.2K
The esophagus, a muscular conduit linking the pharynx and stomach, measures roughly 10 inches (25.4 cm) and sits behind the trachea. It remains collapsed when not swallowing. The esophagus follows a predominantly straight path through the thoracic mediastinum and enters the abdominal cavity through a diaphragmatic opening known as the esophageal hiatus.
The movement of edibles from the pharynx into the esophagus is facilitated by the upper esophageal sphincter, which is formed primarily by the...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

A rare case of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) in a kitten was successfully treated with dietary changes. This condition, characterized by esophageal inflammation, highlights the importance of biopsy for diagnosis and diet in management.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Gastroenterology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an uncommon esophageal inflammatory condition.
  • It is rarely reported in feline species.
  • Diagnosis requires histopathologic confirmation and exclusion of other causes.

Observation:

  • A 4-month-old kitten presented with chronic regurgitation and failure to thrive.
  • Radiography and esophagoscopy revealed esophageal dilatation and mucosal lesions.
  • Histopathology showed severe, chronic, hyperplastic eosinophilic and mastocytic esophagitis.

Findings:

  • Eosinophilic infiltrates were prominent (mean 29.8 eosinophils/HPF), confirming eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE).
  • Dietary modification with a hydrolyzed diet led to significant clinical improvement.
  • Glucocorticoids did not provide additional benefit.
  • Repeat histopathology indicated near resolution of eosinophilic infiltration.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of esophageal biopsies for diagnosing EoE in kittens.
  • Dietary modification is an effective treatment strategy for feline EoE.
  • Early diagnosis and appropriate management can lead to favorable outcomes in affected kittens.
