Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate resident physicians' perceptions of their team-based care training adequacy.
  • To determine if perceived adequacy of team-based care training influences post-residency practice selection.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of survey data from recent residency graduates (Preparing Personal Physicians for Practice Project).
  • Characterization of perceptions regarding team-based care training.
  • Multivariable logistic regression to assess the association between training adequacy and practice choice.

Main Results:

  • Over 82% of graduates reported adequate team-based care training; 7.9% reported no training.
  • Seventy-six percent joined team-based care practices in 2011, increasing to 86% by 2013.
  • Adequately trained graduates had 5.7x higher odds, and over-prepared had 12.5x higher odds, of joining team-based care practices.

Conclusions:

  • A majority of residency graduates perceive their team-based care training as adequate.
  • Adequate team-based care training is significantly associated with physicians joining practices that use this model after graduation.
