Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Epidemiology
  • Sports Medicine

Background:

  • Herpes gladiatorum, a skin infection caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV), is prevalent in contact sports like wrestling.
  • Previous reports focused on case histories, necessitating broader epidemiologic investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the epidemiology of herpes gladiatorum among college wrestlers.
  • To identify risk factors associated with HSV skin infections in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Surveys of college wrestlers and athletic trainers nationwide.
  • Serum antibody studies for HSV in a college wrestling team.
  • Calculation of relative risks (RR) and confidence intervals (C.I.) for identified risk factors.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 18.8% of surveyed college wrestlers reported a history of herpes gladiatorum.
  • Exposure to opponents with cutaneous HSV lesions was a significant risk factor (RR = 9.4).
  • A history of oral HSV infection (cold sores) showed a protective effect (RR = 0.25).
  • National survey indicated 7.6% of college and 2.6% of high school wrestlers had HSV skin infection in 1984-85.

Conclusions:

  • Herpes gladiatorum is a common and significant dermatological problem in college wrestling.
  • Direct exposure to infected wrestlers is a primary driver of HSV transmission in this sport.
  • Understanding risk factors is crucial for implementing effective prevention strategies.
