The Mini Sarcopenia Risk Assessment (MSRA) questionnaire effectively prescreens for sarcopenia in older adults. A shorter version of the MSRA improves its ability to identify individuals with sarcopenia.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Nutritional Science
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Sarcopenia, a condition characterized by loss of muscle mass and strength, significantly impacts the health and independence of the elderly population.
  • Early identification of sarcopenia is crucial for timely intervention and management.
  • The Mini Sarcopenia Risk Assessment (MSRA) questionnaire has been proposed as a potential prescreening tool for sarcopenia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the Mini Sarcopenia Risk Assessment (MSRA) questionnaire as a prescreening tool for sarcopenia.
  • To assess the effectiveness of the MSRA in identifying sarcopenic individuals within a community-dwelling elderly population.

Main Methods:

  • An observational study was conducted with 274 community-dwelling elderly subjects (177 women, 97 men, aged 66-78 years).
Keywords:

  • Sarcopenia was diagnosed based on the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) criteria.
  • The 7-item MSRA questionnaire, assessing anamnestic and nutritional factors, was administered to all participants.
  • Main Results:

    • 33.5% of the participants were classified as sarcopenic.
    • A 7-item MSRA score of 30 or less indicated a 4-fold increased risk of sarcopenia (OR: 4.20; 95% CI: 2.26-8.06), with an ROC curve area of 0.786.
    • A derived 5-item MSRA score showed improved specificity (0.604) compared to the 7-item version (0.505) while maintaining sensitivity (0.804).

    Conclusions:

    • The MSRA questionnaire demonstrates predictive value for sarcopenia and can serve as a useful prescreening instrument.
    • A shortened version of the MSRA questionnaire enhances its capacity for identifying individuals with sarcopenia.
