Background:

  • Limited literature exists on hearing preservation in pediatric cochlear implantation.
  • Conventional full-length electrodes are commonly used in pediatric cochlear implant surgeries.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate hearing preservation outcomes in children undergoing cochlear implantation with conventional full-length electrodes.
  • To provide data for preoperative counseling and inform candidacy expansion for pediatric cochlear implants.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of pediatric patients (2000-2016) with preoperative low-frequency pure tone average (LFPTA) ≤75 dB.
  • Analysis of audiometric data to assess hearing shifts and preservation levels post-implantation.

Main Results:

  • Out of 43 ears, 39.5% had complete and 44.2% had partial hearing preservation.
  • 65.1% of ears maintained functional low-frequency hearing (≤85 dB LFPTA) initially post-surgery.
  • No significant difference in hearing shift was found between electrode types or insertion methods.

Conclusions:

  • Conventional electrodes can achieve significant hearing preservation in most pediatric cochlear implant recipients.
  • Findings support expanded candidacy for pediatric cochlear implants to include more children with residual hearing.
