Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate medication prescription patterns in predialysis CKD patients.
  • To identify trends in medication use based on CKD stage.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study analyzing medical records of 615 predialysis patients.
  • Data collected from CKD Resource Centre, Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Main Results:

  • The average number of medications prescribed per patient was 8.22 ± 2.81.
  • Medication use significantly correlated with CKD stage (3a < 3b < 4 < 5; P <0.001).
  • Top prescribed classes: lipid-lowering agents, calcium channel blockers, and antiplatelet agents. Underutilized classes included phosphate binders, erythropoietin-stimulating agents, and RAAS blockers, especially in advanced stages.

Conclusions:

  • Predialysis CKD patients receive a high volume of prescribed medications.
  • Significant underutilization of certain medication classes was observed in advanced CKD stages.
  • Further assessment of prescribing patterns' impact on morbidity and mortality in Malaysian predialysis patients is warranted.
