Nurses generally respected patient dignity, with high patient satisfaction regarding relationships and independence. However, improvements are needed in public hospitals and emergency departments to ensure consistent dignity in nursing care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate nurses' commitment to respecting patient dignity in Isfahan, Iran hospitals.
  • To assess patient perceptions of dignity in nursing care.
  • To identify areas for improvement in patient dignity practices.

Main Methods:

  • Descriptive-analytical study involving 401 inpatients in Isfahan hospitals.
  • Data collected via a five-point Likert scale questionnaire on patient-nurse relationships, privacy, and independence.
  • Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests (P < 0.05).

Main Results:

  • 91% of patients reported good relationships with nurses.
  • 91.8% found privacy protection to be moderate/good, with 6.5% rating it excellent.
  • 84.4% felt their independence was maintained, and approved of shared decision-making.

Conclusions:

  • Nurses demonstrated an acceptable level of respect for patient dignity.
  • Patient dignity was less well-maintained in public hospitals and emergency departments.
  • Recommendations are made for nursing authorities to implement measures for enhancing patient dignity.
