Psychiatric disorders often predict one another over time, challenging the idea they are separate conditions. This study found significant links between disorders, particularly ADHD predicting internalizing issues.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Developmental Psychology
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Heterotypic psychopathological continuity, where one disorder predicts another, challenges the discrete nature of psychiatric disorders.
- Understanding this continuity is key to unraveling the mechanisms behind psychiatric comorbidity.
- Previous research has not explicitly compared heterotypic effects within and across higher-order psychopathology dimensions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine patterns of homotypic (same disorder over time) and heterotypic psychopathological continuity.
- To compare these continuity patterns within and across higher-order dimensions of psychopathology.
- To investigate the predictive relationships between specific disorders and diagnostic dimensions.
Main Methods:
- Utilized cohort data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC, N=4815).
- Assessed eight common psychiatric disorders at ages 7.5 and 14 years using the Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA).
- Employed cross-lagged models to analyze continuity patterns within and across internalizing-fear, internalizing-distress, and externalizing dimensions.
Main Results:
- Homotypic continuity was observed universally across all disorders.
- Significant heterotypic continuity was found, even after accounting for homotypic continuity and baseline disorder presence.
- While continuity was stronger within higher-order dimensions, notable cross-dimension effects emerged, with ADHD predicting subsequent internalizing disorders.
Conclusions:
- Heterotypic continuity suggests shared etiological factors or localized interactions between disorders.
- Findings highlight the interconnectedness of psychiatric disorders beyond discrete diagnostic categories.
- The study provides evidence for developmental pathways linking externalizing and internalizing psychopathology.

Theoretical Approaches to Psychological Disorder
Biological approach
The biological approach posits that internal, organic factors are the primary causes of such disorders. This perspective emphasizes brain structure and function, genetic predispositions, and neurotransmitter imbalances. For example, schizophrenia has been associated with both genetic...
