Summary

Subcutaneous tetrodotoxin (TTX) showed a clinically significant benefit in treating cancer pain. TTX provided longer pain relief compared to placebo, with mild, transient side effects.

Background:

  • Cancer-related pain is a significant challenge, often inadequately controlled by standard analgesics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of subcutaneous tetrodotoxin (TTX) for managing inadequately controlled cancer-related pain.
  • To assess TTX's potential as an analgesic in oncology.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, placebo-controlled study involving 165 patients with moderate to severe cancer pain.
  • Patients received either TTX (30 μg) or placebo subcutaneously twice daily for four consecutive days.
  • Efficacy was measured by pain and quality of life endpoints; safety was monitored.

  • TTX demonstrated a clinically significant analgesic effect over placebo (16.2% effect size, p=0.0460).
