Dark Triad and Person Perception01:29

Dark Triad and Person Perception

343
Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et...

Psychodynamic Perspectives on Personality

According to this theory, the unconscious mind contains thoughts, memories, and emotions that are too disturbing to face directly.
Psychodynamic theorists argue that unconscious...

Human Genetics

1.8K
Human genetics provides a profound framework for understanding the interplay between genetic predispositions and human psychology. At the heart of this discipline lies the study of how genes influence physical traits, behaviors, and susceptibility to diseases. Each person carries a unique genetic code that subtly or significantly shapes their psychological and behavioral landscape.
The complex relationship between genetics and psychology is observable through common biological components such...

Summary

Psychopathic individuals die significantly younger than the general population, with violent causes of death being more prevalent. Higher psychopathy scores correlate with increased mortality risk.

Area of Science:

  • Forensic Psychiatry
  • Criminology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • The mortality differences between psychopathic and non-psychopathic individuals remain largely unknown.
  • Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by antisocial behavior and a lack of empathy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between psychopathy and mortality.
  • To compare mortality rates and causes of death between psychopathic individuals, non-psychopathic offenders, and the general population.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal follow-up study linking forensic psychiatric examination data (1984-1993) with the National Death Registry.
  • Inclusion of 100 psychopathic individuals (PCL-R score ≥ 25) and two control groups: 178 non-psychopathic offenders (PCL-R score < 25) and a general population sample.
  • Follow-up period of 20-30 years.

Main Results:

  • Psychopathic individuals exhibit significantly higher mortality rates compared to the general population.
  • The mortality rate among psychopaths was approximately fivefold that of the general population.
  • Causes of death in the psychopathic group were more violent than in the non-psychopath control group.
  • A significant positive correlation was observed between Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) scores and mortality.

Conclusions:

  • Psychopathy is associated with a substantially increased risk of premature death.
  • Violent causes of death contribute significantly to the elevated mortality in psychopathic individuals.
  • The findings underscore the severe public health implications of psychopathy.
