  • Searched major smartphone application stores (App Store iOS, Google Play Store, Windows App-Microsoft Store, Blackberry World App store) in December 2016.
  • Utilized relevant keywords for identification.
  • Categorized identified applications.

Main Results:

  • Identified 46 palliative care applications targeting clinicians.
  • Categories include clinical guidelines (17), advance care planning (9), training materials (7), pharmaceutical tools (7), and news/opinion platforms (6).
  • Most apps were free, in English, and available on Android and iOS platforms.

Conclusions:

  • Significant increase in palliative care apps for clinicians over the past five years.
  • A notable limitation is the inadequate reporting of evidence supporting many applications.
  • Need for better transparency regarding the evidential basis of palliative care apps.
