Background:

  • Mycoplasma hominis, a common genitourinary organism, can cause extra-genital infections.
  • Investigated a cluster of M. hominis surgical site infections following spine surgery.

Observation:

  • Infections were linked to amniotic tissue from a single donor.
  • Twenty-seven vials were distributed; 14 patients received at least 20 vials.
  • Four of 14 patients (29%) developed surgical site infections, including two M. hominis cases.

Findings:

  • Mycoplasma hominis was detected in unopened donor vials using culture and qPCR.
  • Whole-genome sequencing showed >99% similarity between patient and vial isolates.
  • Two of 27 vials tested positive for M. hominis.

Implications:

  • Amniotic tissue from a single donor transmitted M. hominis to two patients.
  • Routine donor screening and product testing may not detect all pathogens.
  • Lack of standardized tissue product tracking hinders public health response to outbreaks.
