Bonferroni Test01:10

Bonferroni Test

3.5K
The Bonferroni test is a statistical test named after Carlo Emilio Bonferroni, an Italian mathematician best known for Bonferroni inequalities. This statistical test is a type of multiple comparison test to determine which means are different than the rest. Bonferroni test can minimize the Type 1 error by reducing the significance level alpha, which otherwise increases with sample pairs.
The means of different samples are first paired in all possible combinations.
The null hypothesis of the...

McNemar's Test

927
McNemar's Test is a nonparametric statistical test used to determine if there is a significant difference in proportions between two related groups when the outcome is binary (e.g., yes/no, success/failure). It is beneficial when we have paired data, such as pre-test/post-test designs, where the same subjects are measured under two different conditions. The test is named after the statistician Quinn McNemar, who introduced it in 1947. It is commonly used in situations where subjects are...

Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks Test for Matched Pairs

531
The Wilcoxon signed-rank test for matched pairs evaluates the null hypothesis by combining the ranks of differences with their signs. It essentially tests whether the median of the differences in a population of matched pairs is zero. Since the test incorporates more information than the sign test, it generally yields more trustable conclusions. This test also does not require the data to follow a normal distribution, but two conditions must be met for it to be applicable: (1) the data must...

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

14.2K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Spearman's Rank Correlation Test01:20

Spearman's Rank Correlation Test

1.6K
Spearman's rank correlation test, also known as Spearman's rho, is a nonparametric method for assessing the strength and direction of association between two variables. This test is particularly valuable when the data distribution is unknown or when the assumption of normality does not hold. Named after the English psychologist and statistician Dr. Charles Edward Spearman, it serves as the nonparametric counterpart to Pearson's correlation coefficient.
Spearman's test calculates correlation by...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Bone healing research
  • Clinical outcome assessment

Background:

  • Non-union fractures pose a significant clinical challenge.
  • Accurate classification systems are crucial for effective treatment planning.
  • The Non-Union Scoring System (NUSS) was developed to address these needs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the interobserver reliability of the Non-Union Scoring System (NUSS).
  • To assess the clinical validity of the NUSS in guiding treatment strategies.
  • To compare the reliability of NUSS with the Weber-Cech system.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 44 tibia non-union cases (2005-2015).
  • Independent scoring of patient data by three observers using NUSS criteria.
  • Interobserver agreement assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for NUSS and Fleiss' kappa for Weber-Cech.
  • Clinical validity evaluated by comparing NUSS-proposed treatments with actual patient outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Substantial agreement observed for NUSS scores between observers (ICC = 0.78).
  • Fair agreement noted for the Weber-Cech classification (Fleiss κ = 0.30).
  • NUSS-guided treatment strategies showed strong correlation with definitive treatments (p < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • The Non-Union Scoring System (NUSS) demonstrates high interobserver reliability.
  • The NUSS is a clinically valid tool for classifying non-unions and informing treatment.
  • NUSS offers a more reliable classification compared to the Weber-Cech system.
