Reimagining Childhood: Responding to the Challenge Presented by Severe Developmental Disability
1Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO, USA. esalter@slu.edu.
The dominant view of childhood, rooted in Western philosophy, defines children as future rational adults. This perspective is insufficient for understanding children with severe developmental disabilities and requires a reimagining to ensure their dignity.
Area of Science:
- Bioethics
- Philosophy of Medicine
- Developmental Psychology
Background:
- The prevailing Western concept of childhood views children as future rational, autonomous adults.
- This notion is influenced by philosophical traditions from Aristotle, Kant, and Piaget.
- This perspective has significant, often unexamined, implications for medical practice and societal norms.
Purpose of the Study:
- To expose the underlying medical anthropology of the child in Western thought.
- To examine the impact of this anthropology on pediatric bioethics.
- To advocate for an expanded understanding of childhood, particularly for children with severe and profound intellectual disabilities.
Main Methods:
- Philosophical analysis of the concept of childhood.
- Exploration of the experience of severe and profound intellectual disability.
- Critical examination of pediatric bioethical frameworks.
Main Results:
- The dominant medical anthropology of the child is found to be deficient when applied to children with severe developmental disabilities.
- The focus on future rationality marginalizes the inherent value and experiences of these children.
- Current bioethical approaches may inadvertently perpetuate this deficiency.
Conclusions:
- A reimagining of childhood is necessary to affirm the dignity of children with severe developmental disabilities.
- An expanded notion of childhood can better represent the diverse goods of childhood for all children.
- This reconceptualization is crucial for advancing pediatric bioethics and inclusive societal values.
