Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) 2 and 9 are expressed in active lupus nephritis (LN) with cellular crescents. These enzymes may play a role in the development of kidney lesions in this autoimmune disease.

- Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), specifically MMP2 and MMP9, degrade glomerular basement membrane collagen and are implicated in LN.
