    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Public Health
    • Nutrition Science

    Background:

    • Helicobacter pylori infection is a global health concern, prevalent in developing nations.
    • H. pylori infection may influence calorie consumption and energy balance (homeostasis).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of H. pylori infection and its eradication on patients' nutritional status and dietary habits.

    Main Methods:

    • The study involved 124 patients: H. pylori positive (48), H. pylori negative (45), and eradicated (31).
    • Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated from height and weight measurements.
    • Dietary intake was assessed twice using a 24-hour diet recall (24hR).

    Main Results:

    • Pre-obesity was significantly higher in the group that had eradicated H. pylori (p = 0.011).

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Dietary intake was similar across groups for most nutrients, except for saccharose, which was lowest in the eradicated group (p < 0.001).
  • Conclusions:

    • Eradication of H. pylori was associated with a higher prevalence of pre-obesity.
    • Dietary intake patterns, particularly saccharose consumption, differed post-eradication.
    • Routine assessment of nutritional status and diet is suggested for patients undergoing H. pylori diagnosis.
