C C Boring, R K Brynes, W C Chan

    Lancet (London, England)
    |April 13, 1985

    Summary

The study observed a significant rise in intermediate or high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) among young men during the AIDS epidemic. Extranodal lymphoma cases also increased, indicating shifts in NHL presentation and subtypes.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Epidemiology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) presentation and subtypes may be influenced by infectious epidemics.
    • The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic potentially impacted the epidemiology of various cancers, including lymphomas.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate changes in the relative frequencies of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) subtypes and primary sites in young men.
    • To compare NHL patterns before and during the AIDS epidemic in men aged 20-49 years.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of diagnostic pathological specimens for NHL cases in men aged 20-49 years.
    • Classification of NHL subtypes and grades using the Working Formulation.
    • Analysis of data from a population-based cancer registry.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • A significant increase in intermediate or high-grade NHL was observed, rising from 29% in 1976-77 to 76% in 1981-82.
    • This increase in higher-grade lymphomas remained significant across different age groups (20-39 and 40-49 years) and for married men.
    • A significant rise in extranodal lymphomas was noted in men aged 20-39 years between the two periods.

    Conclusions:

    • The AIDS epidemic was associated with a notable shift towards more aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma subtypes in young men.
    • Changes in extranodal presentation suggest altered disease behavior or diagnostic patterns during the epidemic.
    • These findings highlight the impact of HIV/AIDS on the epidemiology of lymphoid malignancies.
