Limit Laws I01:25

Limit Laws I

270
Limit laws provide essential tools for analyzing how functions behave as their input approaches a specific value. These laws are particularly useful when dealing with combinations of functions, provided the individual limits exist. The Sum and Difference Laws state that the limit of the sum or difference of two functions equals the sum or difference of their respective limits:The Product Law asserts that the limit of the product of two functions equals the product of their individual limits:A...

Social Traps01:41

Social Traps

27.0K
Social traps are negative situations where people get caught in a direction or relationship that later proves to be unpleasant, with no easy way to back out of or avoid. The concept was orignally introduced by John Platt who applied psychology to Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons", where in New England herd owners could let their cattle graze in the common ground. This situation seems like a good idea, but an individual could have an advantage. If they owned...

Introduction to Functions01:29

Introduction to Functions

353
Functions are essential mathematical tools used to describe consistent relationships between varying quantities. A function connects each input to a single, corresponding output based on a defined rule. These relationships appear in both everyday contexts and natural phenomena, providing a framework for understanding change and prediction. One common real-life example is a parking garage fee system, where the total cost depends on the amount of time a vehicle remains inside. In this case, the...

Persuasion Strategies

43.7K
Researchers have tested many persuasion strategies, including the foot-in-the door and the door-in-the-face techniques, in a variety of contexts. Ultimately, the principles are effective in selling products and changing people’s attitude, ideas, and behaviors (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004).

Friction: Problem Solving01:21

Friction: Problem Solving

562
Friction is an essential force that influences the motion of objects in daily life. Depending on the situation, it can be either beneficial or problematic. Consider a bus with a mass of three megagrams and its center of mass at a specific point, moving along a banked road at a constant speed. The coefficient of static friction between the tires and the road is 0.5. Find the maximum angle of the banked road at which the bus would not slip or tip.
Initially, a visual representation of the...

Pigmentation01:19

Pigmentation

4.8K
The color of the skin is influenced by a number of pigments, including melanin, carotene, and hemoglobin. Recall that melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes, which are found scattered throughout the stratum basale of the epidermis. The melanin is transferred to the keratinocytes via melanosomes.
Melanin occurs in two primary forms: eumelanin that provides black and brown pigment and pheomelanin that provides red color. Dark-skinned individuals produce more melanin than those with pale...

Summary

More sunlight is linked to slightly higher taxi tips in New York City. This study found a small, significant increase in tipping percentage with increased solar radiation during cab rides.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Economics
  • Environmental Psychology
  • Transportation Studies

Background:

  • Tipping behavior is influenced by various factors, including service quality and economic conditions.
  • Environmental factors, such as weather and natural light, may also play a role in consumer behavior.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between the level of sunlight and tipping percentages in New York City taxicab rides.
  • To determine if increased solar radiation correlates with changes in taxi driver gratuities.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 13.82 million New York City (NYC) taxicab rides from January to October 2009.
  • Integration of ride data with hourly solar radiation data.
  • Statistical modeling controlling for various confounding variables and using robust standard error clustering.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant positive association was found between sunlight levels and tipping percentage.
  • An estimated increase of 0.5 to 0.7 percentage points in tips was observed when moving from dark conditions to full sunshine.
  • The findings remained robust after controlling for numerous ride and environmental characteristics.

Conclusions:

  • Sunlight exposure appears to have a small but measurable positive effect on taxi tipping behavior in NYC.
  • The unique context of NYC taxi rides, with random rider assignment and direct sun exposure, provides a suitable environment for this analysis.
  • Further research could explore the psychological mechanisms underlying this sunlight-tipping association.
