  • Thrombophilic conditions involve an increased tendency to form blood clots.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of thrombophilic disorders in women with endometriosis.
  • To determine if thrombophilic conditions are associated with endometriosis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 138 endometriosis patients and 278 controls.
  • Blood tests for hyperhomocysteinemia, Factor V Leiden mutation, and Factor II prothrombin G20210A mutation.
  • Analysis of heterozygous and homozygous states for mutations.

Main Results:

  • A significantly reduced prevalence of Factor V Leiden mutation was observed in endometriosis patients (p < 0.05).
  • No significant differences in Factor II mutation or hyperhomocysteinemia were found between groups (p = NS).

Conclusions:

  • Preliminary data indicate no association between thrombophilic conditions and endometriosis.
  • Thrombophilic screening appears unnecessary before initiating hormonal therapies in endometriosis patients.
