Community Based Intervention

536
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Exercise Science
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Physical exercise is recognized for its role in psychiatric care.
  • Feasibility of exercise interventions in residential mental health settings is under-researched.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of a 10-week exercise intervention for residents with severe mental illness (SMI) in a residential care setting.
  • To assess participant engagement, adherence, and the impact of exercise on psychiatric symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • A mixed-methods approach was used to evaluate a 10-week intervention.
  • The intervention included weekly fitness classes and other exercise activities for 51 residents with SMI across four services.
  • Consent rate was 27.5%, with a 35.7% dropout rate over 10 weeks.

Main Results:

  • Participants averaged 87.6 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise weekly.
  • Fitness classes had poor attendance, and adherence to unsupervised exercise was low.
  • Increased physical activity correlated with significantly reduced negative symptoms in completers.

Conclusions:

  • Implementing exercise interventions in residential psychiatric care presents significant challenges.
  • Supervised classes may not appeal to all residents, and unsupervised exercise lacks adherence.
  • Future interventions require tailored programs considering participant preferences to enhance engagement and address motivational issues.
