    Background:

    • Older adults with multiple sclerosis (MS) face compounded challenges from aging and a chronic neurological condition.
    • These challenges significantly impact physical activity, sedentary behavior, and overall physical function.
    • Understanding the relationship between different intensities of physical activity and physical function is crucial for this demographic.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the associations between light physical activity (LPA), moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and sedentary behavior with physical function in older adults with MS.
    • To determine if LPA or MVPA is more strongly associated with physical function outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • Forty older adults with MS (median age 60 years, median Expanded Disability Status Scale score 4.5) participated in the study.
    • Participants wore an accelerometer for 7 days to measure physical activity levels (LPA and MVPA) and sedentary behavior.
    • Physical function was assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), 6-minute walk (6MW), and timed 25-foot walk (T25FW).

    Main Results:

    • LPA showed significant positive associations with SPPB, 6MW, and T25FW scores.
    • MVPA was significantly associated with 6MW and T25FW scores.
    • Linear regression analyses confirmed that LPA, but not MVPA, was significantly associated with all measured physical function outcomes (SPPB, 6MW, T25FW).

    Conclusions:

    • Higher levels of light physical activity are associated with better physical function in older adults with multiple sclerosis.
    • LPA may be a more critical target for behavioral interventions aimed at improving physical function in this population compared to MVPA.
    • Future research and interventions should consider the role of LPA in maintaining or improving mobility and performance in older adults with MS.
