Background:

The Verona Coding Definitions of Emotional sequences (VR-CoDES) is used to analyze emotional communication in healthcare.
It has been employed as a proxy for patient-centeredness due to its focus on provider responses to patient emotions.

Purpose of the Study:

To discuss the contribution and limitations of the VR-CoDES system in relation to the broader concept of patient-centeredness.
To explore how VR-CoDES dimensions align with patient-centered communication.

Main Methods:

Conceptual analysis comparing VR-CoDES with patient-centeredness.
Examination of VR-CoDES dimensions (Explicit/non explicit responding, Providing or Reducing Space) in the context of patient-centered communication.

Main Results:

Emotional aspects are a component of patient-centeredness but not the sole dimension.
