Insights
A retained Double J ureteral stent caused large kidney and bladder stones in a child. Both renal and bladder calculi were successfully removed in one procedure using minimally invasive techniques.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Pediatric Surgery
- Nephrolithiasis Management
Background:
- Retained Double J ureteral stents can lead to complications, including calculus formation.
- Management of complex pediatric urolithiasis requires tailored surgical approaches.
Observation:
- A 10-year-old female presented with a retained Double J ureteral stent associated with significant calculus burden at both stent ends.
- The patient had both renal and bladder calculi.
Findings:
- Successful management of retained Double J stent calculi was achieved in a single surgical session.
- Percutaneous nephrolithotomy was used for renal calculi.
- Percutaneous cystolitholapaxy was employed for bladder calculi.
Implications:
- This case highlights the feasibility of a single-sitting, minimally invasive approach for complex retained stent calculus management in children.
- Effective treatment options exist for managing stent-related urolithiasis in pediatric patients.
- Minimally invasive techniques can resolve challenging calculus burdens associated with ureteral stents.
Abstract:
We report a case of retained Double J ureteral stent with huge, multiple calculi at both ends in a 10-year-old female child. The renal and bladder calculi were managed by percutaneous nephrolithotomy and percutaneous cystolitholapaxy in a single sitting.
