A new low-power application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detectors was developed for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). The 32-channel prototype ASIC demonstrates excellent performance with low power consumption and minimal noise.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Detector Electronics
  • Semiconductor Technology

Background:

  • Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) requires advanced detector electronics for improved imaging.
  • Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detectors offer high-resolution photon detection for SPECT applications.
  • Low-power, high-performance integrated circuits are crucial for compact and efficient SPECT systems.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and test a novel low-power application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for CZT detectors used in SPECT.
  • To evaluate the performance characteristics of a 32-channel prototype ASIC, including power consumption, noise, and linearity.
  • To demonstrate the feasibility of using custom CMOS ASICs for next-generation SPECT systems.

  • Designed and fabricated a 32-channel prototype ASIC using TSMC 0.35-μm CMOS technology.
  • Integrated preamplifiers, CR-RC³ shaping circuits, and energy binning with comparators and counters.
  • Characterized the ASIC's performance, including power consumption, Equivalent Noise Charge (ENC), crosstalk, and Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) linearity.
  • Main Results:

    • Achieved low power consumption of approximately 1 mW/channel at a 2.5-V supply.
    • Measured an Equivalent Noise Charge (ENC) of 360 electrons at room temperature with a peaking time of 500 ns.
    • Demonstrated low crosstalk (<0.3%) and excellent DAC linearity (INL <0.56%, DNL <0.33%).

    Conclusions:

    • The developed 32-channel ASIC is a promising low-power solution for CZT detectors in SPECT.
    • The measured performance metrics meet the requirements for advanced medical imaging applications.
    • This work paves the way for more integrated and efficient SPECT systems.
