Summary

This study found five canine vector-borne pathogens in stray dogs in Turkey, with Hepatozoon spp. being most common. Ehrlichia canis was reported for the first time in this region.

Background:

  • Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) pose a significant threat to dog health.
  • Understanding the prevalence and molecular characteristics of CVBD pathogens is crucial for effective control strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and molecular characterization of various CVBD pathogens in stray dogs in Erzurum, Northeastern Turkey.
  • To investigate the association of pathogen prevalence with dog sex and age.

Main Methods:

  • Blood samples from 133 stray dogs were analyzed using conventional and nested PCR.
  • Detected pathogens included Babesia spp., Hepatozoon spp., Dirofilaria immitis, Dirofilaria repens, Acanthocheilonema reconditum, Ehrlichia canis, and Anaplasma platys.
  • Statistical analysis (X² test) was used to assess the relationship between pathogen prevalence, sex, and age.

Main Results:

  • The overall prevalence of at least one CVBD pathogen was 48.9%.
  • Hepatozoon spp. (27.1%) and Ehrlichia canis (9.8%) were the most prevalent pathogens detected.
  • The first report of Ehrlichia canis in stray dogs in Erzurum was documented. Leishmania spp., D. repens, A. reconditum, and A. platys were not detected.
  • Mixed infections were found in 10.8% of infected dogs, predominantly with Hepatozoon spp.

Conclusions:

  • Five CVBD pathogens are prevalent in stray dogs in Erzurum, Turkey.
  • The study highlights the importance of molecular diagnostics for accurate CVBD identification.
  • No significant association was found between pathogen prevalence, sex, or age in the studied dog population.
