Assessing Body Temperature - Axilla01:14

Assessing Body Temperature - Axilla

1.5K
Procedural Guide for Assessing Axillary Body Temperature using a Digital Thermometer:
Step 1: Perform hand hygiene and put on clean gloves to maintain infection control and prevent cross-contamination.
Step 2: Prepare the patient by explaining the procedure to ensure understanding and cooperation. Ensure privacy, expose the axilla, and inform the patient that minimal movement is crucial for an accurate reading.
Step 3: Adjust the patient’s clothing to expose only the axilla. It minimizes...

Accessory Structures of the Skin: Sweat Glands

4.3K
Sweat glands or sudoriferous glands are one of the important accessory structures of the skin. They are small, coiled tubular structures located in the dermis, the middle layer of the skin. Sweat glands are responsible for producing and secreting sweat, a watery fluid that helps regulate body temperature and excrete waste products.
Sweat glands are classified as merocrine glands; that is, the secretions are excreted by exocytosis through a duct without affecting the cells of the gland. There...

Disorders of the Autonomic Nervous System

1.7K
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is an intricate network of nerves that controls functions such as the regulation of heart rate, digestion, and blood pressure regulation. When this system malfunctions, it can lead to various disorders that affect multiple bodily functions. One common feature of many autonomic disorders is the involvement of smooth blood vessels, which play a crucial role in regulating blood flow throughout the body.
Raynaud's disease, also known as Raynaud's...

Assessment of the Cardiovascular System III: Palpation

1.2K
Palpation involves feeling the body to evaluate texture, size, consistency, and tenderness for assessing cardiovascular health. The following steps are organized in a head-to-toe order:
Jugular Venous Pressure (JVP) Measurement
Position the patient at a thirty- to forty-five-degree angle or in a semi-fowler's position. Look for the highest point of pulsation in the internal jugular vein and measure the vertical distance to the angle of Loius or sternal angle. A normal JVP is 3-4 cm above...

Arteries of the Upper Limbs01:12

Arteries of the Upper Limbs

2.7K
The subclavian artery transitions into the axillary artery as it exits the chest and enters the axillary region. This artery is critical for supplying blood to the shoulder area, including the head of the humerus, through the humeral circumflex arteries. As the vessel continues into the upper arm or brachium, it becomes the brachial artery. This artery plays a key role in vascularizing the brachial region and bifurcates at the elbow into several branches. These branches include the deep...

Summary

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital disorder. This case highlights an unusual presentation of KTS with unilateral hyperhidrosis accompanying limb hypertrophy.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Malformations
  • Genetics and Development
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by vascular anomalies.
  • It typically involves capillary malformations, soft tissue/bone hypertrophy, and venous malformations.
  • KTS exhibits significant clinical variability.

Observation:

  • A 28-year-old male presented with a hypertrophic right arm.
  • He also exhibited markedly increased unilateral axillary hyperhidrosis on the same side.
  • Erythematous patches were noted on his back, chest, and arm.

Findings:

  • This case presents an unusual association of unilateral hyperhidrosis with limb hypertrophy in KTS.
  • The hyperhidrosis was ipsilateral to the affected limb, which is not a typical feature.
  • The combination of vascular malformations, hypertrophy, and hyperhidrosis suggests a complex neurovascular component.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known clinical spectrum of Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome.
  • It suggests potential autonomic nervous system involvement in KTS.
  • Further research into the neurovascular aspects of KTS is warranted.
