Accessibility to services and opportunities is crucial for urban development.
Previous studies on transport infrastructure benefits have yielded inconclusive results.
Australia's diverse settlements, from liveable cities to isolated areas, provide a unique study context.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the connectivity and accessibility of 1814 Australian human settlements.
To analyze the relationship between settlement accessibility and socio-economic characteristics.
To develop a metric for ranking settlements based on population and inter-settlement access.

Main Methods:

Quantified connectivity and accessibility for all Australian settlements (>200 persons).
Utilized population as a proxy for available opportunities.
Developed a ranking metric based on population size and distance to other settlements.

Main Results:

Revealed a highly unequal distribution of access to opportunities across Australia.
Identified a strong concentration of opportunities in capital cities, especially Sydney and Melbourne.
