    Area of Science:

    • Geriatric Medicine
    • Pharmacology
    • Sleep Medicine

    Background:

    • Insomnia is a prevalent issue in geriatric populations.
    • Short-acting benzodiazepines are commonly prescribed for sleep disturbances.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and acceptability of lormetazepam in geriatric insomniacs.
    • To determine the optimal dosage of lormetazepam for elderly patients.

    Main Methods:

    • An open, single-center, general practice study.
    • Fifty-eight geriatric insomniacs received nightly lormetazepam for 7 nights.
    • Dosages ranged from 0.5 mg to 1.5 mg, with patient-assessed efficacy via diary cards.

    Main Results:

    • 65.5% of patients reported improved sleep patterns.
    • 76.9% utilized the 0.5 mg dosage by the final night.
    • Significant increases in sleep duration and feeling refreshed were observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Lormetazepam demonstrates efficacy and acceptability in treating geriatric insomnia.
    • The 0.5 mg dosage appears more suitable for elderly patients compared to higher doses.
    • Further research may support 0.5 mg as a preferred starting dose.
