Summary

Rapidly identifying vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) is crucial for treatment and infection control. However, the chromID™ VRE agar demonstrated high sensitivity but poor specificity in a recent study.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic performance of chromID™ VRE agar for the rapid identification of VRE.
  • To assess the sensitivity and specificity of this selective agar medium.

  • The chromID™ VRE agar was tested with 184 clinical isolates of Enterococcus species.
  • Performance was assessed using a panel of Enterococcus spp. and recognized reference strains.

  • The test displayed a low specificity of 30%, indicating a high rate of false positives.
