Background:

  • The Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) has caused multiple outbreaks in Saudi Arabia since 2012.
  • Public awareness regarding MERS-CoV transmission and prevention remains poorly understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the knowledge level of the adult population in Riyadh regarding Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).
  • To identify factors associated with inadequate knowledge about MERS-CoV epidemiology.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was conducted using self-administered questionnaires distributed to 676 randomly selected adults in Riyadh malls.
  • Data collected included demographic information, MERS-CoV knowledge levels (epidemiological and clinical), and information sources.

Main Results:

  • Overall knowledge of MERS-CoV was fair (66.0%), with good knowledge of clinical manifestations (90.7%) but weaker knowledge of epidemiological features (58.3%).
  • The internet was the primary source of information (89.0%), while healthcare providers and traditional media were rated low.
  • Younger age (≤30 years), male gender, and lack of tertiary education were significant predictors of poor epidemiological knowledge.

Conclusions:

  • Inadequate public knowledge of MERS-CoV epidemiology was observed in Riyadh, with a reliance on recognizing clinical symptoms.
  • Targeted public health education programs are crucial to enhance awareness of MERS-CoV's epidemiological determinants.
