Summary

Background:

Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory condition, affects a significant portion of the adult population.
Emerging evidence suggests potential links between systemic inflammation and various cancers, including breast cancer.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between periodontitis and breast cancer.
To evaluate the odds of breast cancer among women with periodontitis in a Brazilian cohort.

Main Methods:

A hospital-based case-control study involving 67 breast cancer cases and 134 controls.
Participants were matched for age and smoking status.
Conditional logistic regression was employed to analyze the association, utilizing four distinct periodontitis case definitions.

Main Results:

Cases exhibited significantly greater clinical attachment loss compared to controls (P=.04).
Women diagnosed with periodontitis demonstrated a two to three times higher odds of breast cancer after adjusting for covariates (P<.05).

Conclusions:

A significant association exists between periodontitis and breast cancer.
Periodontitis may represent a risk factor for breast cancer development.
