    Background:

    • Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a complex neurological disorder.
    • Estrogen's role in TD neuropathology is not fully understood.
    • Limited research exists on estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) for TD.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of estrogen replacement therapy in reducing abnormal involuntary movements in post-menopausal women with TD.
    • To assess the impact of ERT on parkinsonian and psychological symptoms associated with TD.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, randomized clinical trial was conducted.
    • 10 post-menopausal women diagnosed with TD were enrolled.
    • Participants received either estrogen replacement or a placebo for 3 weeks.

    • The estrogen group showed a 38% decrease in Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) scores, compared to 9% in the placebo group.
    • The difference in AIMS score reduction between groups was marginally significant (p < 0.10).

    Conclusions:

    • Preliminary findings suggest a potential benefit of estrogen in managing TD-related abnormal movements.
