Benzodiazepines in the control of anxiety-induced depression

The coexistence of anxiety and depression as one syndrome is well documented. Benzodiazepines are not effective in the treatment of endogenous depression where tricyclic and newer antidepressants are more effective. However, they do combat the symptoms of non-endogenous depression and many of those found in anxiety disorders, including depressed mood, i.e. they may elevate the depressed mood that occurs secondary to anxiety. A study using bromazepam undertaken in 1984 by Roche with general practitioners confirmed this trend towards normalization of mood.
