Dietary beetroot juice - effects on physical performance in COPD patients: a randomized controlled crossover trial

Dietary beetroot juice (BR) supplementation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients increased plasma nitrite and lowered diastolic blood pressure (BP). However, it did not improve exercise performance or walking capacity.

- Seven days of BR supplementation effectively increased plasma nitrite and reduced DBP in COPD patients.
- BR supplementation did not enhance functional walking capacity or improve oxygen consumption during submaximal exercise in this cohort.
- Further research may be needed to explore optimal dosing or different patient subgroups.
